Born in Daudkandi, Cumilla (1956); graduated from Mymensingh Medical College (1980); obtained FCPS (Pediatrics) from Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (1988); had clinical fellowship in Pediatric Respiratory Medicine from Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, Sydney, Australia (1995).

Contributions

Prof Luthful Kabir is the pioneer personality in pediatric respiratory research in Bangladesh; the founder General Secretary of Bangladesh Pediatric Pulmonology Forum (BPPF-2002). His research interest is bronchiolitis, childhood asthma, foreign body aspiration, cystic fibrosis, inborn errors of immunity (IEI) etc.

— Prof L Kabir spearheaded studies to discover BRONCHIOLITIS in Bangladesh (BJCH 2002) and proved that the commonest cause of respiratory distress in young children is bronchiolitis (21%), not pneumonia (8%) in a nationwide study (JRMRT 2016) and no antibiotic is needed for its treatment in a multi-centre RCT with the largest sample size ever conducted (Acta Pediatrica 2009); his two studies on antibiotics and bronchiolitis have got their places in Cochrane data base (Cochrane review 2014) among seven out of 728 during the period of 48 years, 1966-2014. Our discovery of bronchiolitis has led to the introduction of nebulized therapy in Bangladesh since 2004 when the guideline for the management of bronchiolitis was introduced through DGHS. His studies on bronchiolitis caused a paradigm shift to the perception of doctors of Bangladesh about the differential diagnosis of pneumonia to be bronchiolitis which can be treated without antibiotics. This provides a great opportunity to keep in check antimicrobial resistance (AMR) due to indiscriminate use of antibiotics.

— He invented a fast, cheap and effective indigenously body wrapped sweating technique measured by US-Easy Lyte-automated microprocessor-controlled analyzer and published his long 20-years work on 95 cases of CYSTIC FIBROSIS (Global Pediatric Health 2020). This has created a great awareness among the pediatricians about cystic fibrosis and now they can think beyond pulmonary tuberculosis when come across a child with chronic respiratory problem and failure to thrive.

— He first introduced PEDIATRIC FIBEROPTIC BRONCHOSCOPY service in Bangladesh at ICMH (2000).

— Prof LKabir has more than 150 SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONs home and abroad including TWENTY BOOKS to his credit. Some of the books are: Pediatric Practice on Parents’ Presentation (2011), Shishu-0-Hashi (2015), Atlas on Clinical Pediatrics (2016), Clinical and Visual Pediatrics (2019), Pediatric Clinical Radiology and Imaging (2022). His books are different and stands out in the crowd with its unique way to deal with the subject (book review in Indian J Pediatrics 2012).

— He DONATED BDT 50,00,000 (FIFTY LAC) to Bangladesh Pediatric Association (BPA) as research grant for post graduate (FCPS/MD) students (2017). So far, 70 post graduate trainee students in Pediatrics have received BDT twelve lac to facilitate their research activities. This great initiative has stimulated the PG students for better research work and moreover, contributed a lot to streamline the research work as the protocols are reviewed trough a stringent review format.
